9 Superheroes Who Have Been Played By Three Or More Actors (And Who Did It Best)
9. The Fantastic Four
Played By: (Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, Jamie Bell); (Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, Michael Chiklis); (Alex Hyde-White, Jay Underwood, Rebecca Staab, Michael Bailey Smith)
When it comes to the three different iterations of the Fantastic Four that have appeared on the big screen, the question is not which group of actors did it best, but rather, which was the least awful.
The original Fantastic Four film never even (officially) saw the light of day, and taking a look at it, it's not hard to see why. The actors involved did their best with what they had to work with, Alex Hyde-White (who played Reed Richards) especially, but they simply couldn't make up for the film's cheesy writing, laughable special effects, and ridiculous outfits (all of which stemmed from a miniscule budget.)
Similarly, 2005's Fantastic Four film had a solid cast, but once again, the movie was way too cheesy and poorly written to play to any of the actors' strengths. And its sequel, Rise of the Silver Surfer, didn't fare much better. Ioan Gruffudd, Chris Evans, Jessica Alba, and Michael Chiklis were cast pretty spot-on as Marvel's first family, but the scripts just weren't there for them.
Finally, we come to 2015's Fantastic Four, which, instead of being ungodly campy, decided to go with the other extreme and be way more self-serious than it had any reason to be. It's clear that the talented actors playing the team were trying, but the film simply didn't allow them to have any fun with their roles. This, combined with its many other faults, made the whole movie a slog to sit through.
Who Did It Best: The 2005-2007 team of Gruffudd, Evans, Alba, and Chiklis gets the nod here, even if that's not saying much. If nothing else, they were at least entertainingly silly, whereas the 1994 cast was painfully silly and the 2015 cast was boringly dour.
