Sean Connery's portrayal of a whiskery, Ruskie sub captain may have received star billing in John McTiernan's Cold War yarn, but it was Alec Baldwin that stole the show as one Jack Ryan. In what stands as the first cinematic outing for Tom Clancy's famed CIA analyst, Baldwin's performance was a serious and spot on calling card, where he proved to be a savvy foil to Connery's rogue (or is he?) naval bod. Showing off some decent acting and action chops - especially during the film's nail-chomping finale - Baldwin's critically-acclaimed success in putting Ryan on Hollywood's radar laid down the gauntlet for the likes of Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck and Chris Pine to follow in his footsteps.
