The Tomb Raider reboot is pressing ahead, and now it's found its Lara Croft.

As revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, Alicia Vikander has landed the role as the adventurous, a*s-kicking archeologist, with the movie being directed by Roar Uthaug (best known for Norwegian film The Wave). It will reportedly focus on a young Croft attempting to survive her first adventure.

Plans for a reboot for the movie franchise have been in place ever since the 2013 game brought the series a renewed life, but it's Vikander's casting that makes this really interesting. She won an Oscar for her performance in The Danish Girl, while she was absolutely stunning in Ex-Machina, proving herself as one of the best young actresses around at the moment.

Since debuting in 1996, Tomb Raider has become one of the best-selling videogame series of all-time, with Lara Croft an instantly recognisable figure. Angelina Jolie famously brought the character to life on the big screen in a couple of outings at the turn of the century, but while that helped launch her star further the films themselves were poorly received.

Whether they can make this work on-screen now remains to be seen, but with Vikander on board they'll no doubt have high hopes for this kick-starting a franchise.

Warner Bros. and MGM are co-producing this one, with no release date currently set. As for Vikander, she'll be seen this year in Jason Bourne and The Light Between Oceans, which will probably see her in contention again come the next awards season.
