Much like Best Original Song, Best Original Score is a frustrating category that's biased towards more classical musical scores and is especially prejudiced against electronic music, presumably due to the Academy still being largely composed of old men.

Though the Academy rightly recognised Dunkirk and Phantom Thread's scores, they made one key mistake here, by nominating John Williams for his Star Wars: The Last Jedi score rather than his effortlessly superior work on The Post.

It's Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch's score for Blade Runner 2049, though, that should win, managing to impossibly live up to the brilliance of Vangelis' score for the original movie. The Academy didn't even bother nominating it, sadly.

And finally, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword may have been a critical and commercial dud, but Daniel Pemberton's pulsing score was clearly in search of a much better film. It was never going to be nominated, but it sure should've been if people were considering the scores purely on their own merits.
