These two categories have been combined into one field because most voters can't even tell the difference between the two, and the winner would be the same in any event.
Dunkirk's soundscape of utter mayhem, blended with Hans Zimmer's pulsing score, is the year's most sonically complex and layered offering, which is why it'll probably end up deservedly scooping both awards.
It feels like the Academy nominated The Shape of Water here simply because it's a glossy Best Picture nominee rather than because it actually did anything interesting with sound, so we switched it out for the bone-crunching fight effects and blistering gunfire of John Wick: Chapter 2.
