WINNER: War for the Planet of the Apes

Though it's looking increasingly likely that War for the Planet of the Apes is going to be snubbed for the Best Visual Effects Oscar - much like its two predecessors - it is, by any logical metric, the most jaw-dropping visual effects showcase of any movie released last year.

Perhaps Academy voters have been thrown off by the performance capture aspect of the effects, for though probable winner Blade Runner 2049's extensive effects work is absolutely stunning, it doesn't quite reach the mind-bogglingly lifelike quality of all those apes.
