And finally, we come to the big one. Best Picture is always a hugely contentious field, but this year has proven an especially rough year, with the laughably undeserving likes of Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Book and Vice scoring inexplicable nominations.

Elsewhere, were Black Panther and A Star Is Born really among the 10 best movies of the year? We're not quite convinced, while The Favourite just barely avoided inclusion in our top 10 despite being a really, really great film.

So, our Best Picture field includes just two of the actual eight nominees: BlacKkKlansman and Roma. Instead, we've decided to honour Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (yes, animated films can and have been Best Picture nominees), Eighth Grade, Avengers: Infinity War (yes, it was better than Black Panther, sorry), First Man, Tamara Jenkins's criminally underrated drama Private Life, Annihilation and shock snub-ee, If Beale Street Could Talk.

And the winner is, of course, Hereditary. Despite scoring not even a single Oscar nomination, Hereditary is a near-perfect horror movie, combining heart-rending drama with bone-rattling terror to dizzying effect.

It is most certainly a movie people will still be talking about in decades, which is more than can be said for most of the actual Best Picture nominees.
