WINNER: Moonlight

Even if it didn't have any musical score to speak of, Moonlight would be a masterful drama, but award-winning composer and pianist Nicholas Britell helps take it to the next level with his deeply affecting, violin-driven compositions.

The signature track, Middle of the World, is a work of awe-inspiring beauty, and anchors a musical score that perfectly cements and compliments the movie's sumptuous themes and gorgeous visual style.

Arrival was a very close second here, but as its signature song actually isn't an original composition, it gets the silver (while the Academy in fact disqualified it completely on these grounds).
