On the back of X-Men Apocalypse director Bryan Singer responding to criticism of the look and sound of Oscar Isaac's villain in the upcoming sequel, a video has emerged showcasing an alternate design that was initially in the running for consideration.

Ironhead Studios - the renowned company responsible for costume designs for Daft Punk, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Joel Schumacher's Batman movies (forgive them) - appeared at Monsterpalooza at the end of last month, with founder Jose Fernandez bringing his version of Apocalypse along to show. Thanks to a video posted by Tested, we get a pretty good look at the bust.

The design is far more in fitting with the comic book look of Apocalypse, and frankly it's a shame Ironhead were pipped to the job in the end.

It actually sounds like Fernandez is annoyed at not only losing out on the job, but with what the successful bidder actually designed:

"What happened was, I was actually in the running for the job. Another company won out the bid. So - as bummed as Iwas, because Ireally wanted to showcase what I could do - Iworked with a designer to do almost every other costume in the film. So I had my hands full, and Iwas like okay... Then when the image was released, I, like most people, was a little underwhelmed - for whatever reasons, you know - but Ihad a life-cast of Oscar Isaac so I thought 'well, what would Ihave done'

So I went and started putting clay on it, and Ithought 'maybe it's not possible to make him look like this character... But that is sculpted on Oscar Isaac, so it was possible. So Ijust said I'll do my version - an homage to this character. So I sculpted the make-up and kind of bashed out the armour fairly quickly... but just an impression of what that character could be or could have been."

Here's the video in full, which shows off some more of Fernandez's work. The guy's a genius.
