5 Awesome Performances...

5. Selina Kyle - The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

You could say that Anne Hathaway had a big year in 2012. By the following spring, she'd not only scored her second billion dollar box office pull, but she was also an Oscar winner. Not bad for twelve months work. That first accolade came courtesy of her part in Christopher Nolan's trilogy ending The Dark Knight Rises; the definitive comic book movie event, which could well be classed as one of the most hotly anticipated movies of all time. It's certainly top five, anyway. Hathaway starred as Selina Kyle, the latest big-screen version of Catwoman (in all but name, anyway), and thankfully just about managed to banish any lingering memories of Halle Berry's failed standalone attempt. Which in itself was a wonderful achievement. In keeping with Nolan's more grounded Bat-trilogy, this was a different, more restrained performance to that of Michelle Pfeiffer in 1989 as well, and it suit the universe exceptionally well. Catwoman is a character who could easily be over-the-top, but Hathaway gave her heart and grounding (even if editing robbed her of some of her backstory) and her power and poise probably owes a lot to the training she went through. There's also a vulnerability to the character as well, which makes you sympathise with her even when her motives aren't exactly clear, which is clearly important in Nolan's complex vision.
