5. Indiana Jones And Star Wars Are Reference Points
Wan and co really want to make it clear that they're not just making a superhero movie here, but a real action adventure with a quest, a fantastic new world, and a bit of romance.
Commonly cited in all of the reports is Raiders of the Lost Ark, which seems to be the biggest touchstone for the movie, with Safran saying: "The movie is in the vein of Indiana Jones. James [Wan] wanted to tell this swashbuckling, fun, quest movie. Just, it’s a great time for everybody to see."
Another movie commonly referenced is Romancing The Stone, a romantic comedy/adventure movie starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner, which seems to have influenced the relationship between Arthur and Mera. Momoa, meanwhile, cites Star Wars as well in his interview with Collider, saying "it’s just a world we haven’t seen before."
