Avengers 4: Chris Evans Might Not Be Done With Captain America After All

Don't mourn him just yet...

Not so long ago, it looked inevitable that Chris Evans would leave his role as Captain America at the end of the Civil War arc in the MCU, mirroring the fate of the character in the comics. Ultimately, though, The Russos went a different direction with the film, and the Cap lives on - albeit without his costume and shield for now.

Ever since then, Steve Rogers has also looked like the prime candidate to be killed off in either Avengers: Infinity War or Avengers 4. Not only would it be a fitting end to the character, whose death in the comics was dramatic and important, but it would also deal with Evans' contract running out.

From there, maybe we'd get to see Bucky or Sam Wilson as the new Cap, or maybe Evans would return after a few years' hiatus (where he could channel his love of directing), again mirroring the comics when it was revealed Cap wasn't dead after all. However it went, it always looked like the end of Evans' run as Cap was an unspoken inevitability, but it might not actually be the case, even though a recent Esquire profile suggested he was probably done with Cap.

Evans has been talking to Collider and inevitably the question of his future and Cap's future came up. His response isn't quite as devastatingly final as it might have seemed not even so long ago:

“It’s really not up to me. My contract is up. I’m not going to sit here and say, “No more.” I think Hugh Jackman has made 47 Wolverine movies, and they somehow keep getting better. It’s a character I love, and it’s a factory that really knows what they’re doing. The system is sound, over there. They make great movies. If they weren’t kicking out quality, I’d have a different opinion. But, everything Marvel does seems to be cinema gold. And like I said, I love the character. The only reason it would end is ‘cause my contract is up. After Avengers 4, my contract is done. Talk to Marvel. If we engage further, I’d be open to it. I love the character. It’s almost like high school. You certainly always look to senior year, and then, all of a sudden, senior year happens and you’re like, “I don’t know if I’m ready to go.” It’s tough thinking about not playing the guy.”

So the ball is seemingly in Marvel's court. If they want Cap killed off, it won't be Evans' call, and judging by the increasingly good performance of his films, you'd have to think it would take something pretty big for them to trash one of the MCU's biggest, strongest brands.
