It's been well established by a lot of fans that Doctor Strange had a plan when he allowed Thanos to snap him out of existence and one popular theory suggests that he actually went back in time to the 1990s before handing over the Time Stone to warn Captain Marvel and Nick Fury to prepare for Thanos' conquest...

It seems a little unlikely that we wouldn't get to see even a small hint of Strange jumping to the past, but there's evidence to suggest there's something about this rumour, certainly.
The idea that Nick Fury actually started the Avengers Initiative as a direct response to Strange's warning about Thanos makes a lot of sense too. Alternatively, of course, it could be true that Fury called for Marvel as he thought the Skrulls were attacking once more.
