Why?

A core reason why Guardians of the Galaxy is so beloved as a franchise, Drax's mix of heartfelt backstory with his slaughtered family, mixed with a mentality that takes everything seriously, has made for possibly the most loveable member of the team.

There just isn't a way to do a Guardians 3 without Drax - unless we follow Sylvester Stallone's Ravagers instead - and as James Gunn has written and directed this character since the beginning, it's not workable or profitable in-canon or out, to ditch him.
