One thing that has become abundantly clear since the end of The Dark Knight Rises and the criticism that appeared from certain quarters - including my own disappointment with various elements of the film - is the fervent dedication of Nolan's fans. Thanks to the success of the trilogy, and the attention that Nolan's work generally tends to attract as a so-called auteur film-maker, fans of this trilogy have been vociferous in their appreciation of the films, and fierce in their defence of the final one in the face of criticism. As a business decision, the option to turn their back on this fan-base in the hope that the true Batman fans, and not just the fans of Nolan's Batman will be as dedicated to the new film is ropey at best, and catastrophic at worst, if those same fans decide that Nolan's is the definitive take on the character and consequently decide not to dedicate themselves quite so hard to the next film. The fans have the power, or they should have, and Warners may well be gambling their devotion with a reboot.
