A trailer for another 2013 Oscar hopeful has bowed online with the release of Baz Luhrmann's 3D (!?) adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby" starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton and Isla Fisher. Have a gander at it below... http://youtu.be/OULhlaX6JY4 One thing is for sure, and it's something you can always expect from Luhrmann, is that the film looks stylish and the trailer certainly has some glimpses of actors performing in the hopes of securing a few nods. Unfortunately - much like the recent trailer for Gangster Squad - the marketing department at Warner Bros have bunged on some irritatingly anachronistic music. However, the disconcerting aspect of that soundtrack choice is whether or not that is indicative of the musical direction Luhrmann might take with the film, he's no stranger to intentional anachronism after all! This film does also mark the reunion of Luhrmann and DiCaprio, 16 years since their hugely successful adaptation of Romeo + Juliet. Craig Pearce is also on scripting duties with Luhrmann, and considering he was responsible for work on every Luhrmann script but "Australia", perhaps there's another reason to remain optimistic (though, having said that, I did actually enjoy "Australia" for all its glorious melodramatic lunacy!). The story of the book (and presumably the film) takes place after the first World War, where veteran and graduate Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) moves to New York, where he winds up neighboring the mansion of Gatsby (DiCaprio). Nick finds himself invited to one of Gatsby's elaborate parties where he becomes fascinated by this man and is drawn into a tale of obsession and tragedy. One adjective we can guarantee will be used in relation to this film is 'sumptuous', but, whether there will be enough good work up on the screen beyond the visuals is hard to tell at this stage, the cast are dependable, but that's no certainty, even when working with a text as beloved as "The Great Gatsby". "The Great Gatsby" is released in the USA on 25th December 2012 and the UK on 26th December 2012.
