In The Original

Maurice is a crack-pot (but obviously still brilliant) inventor.

In The Remake

With Belle taking his "job" in the live action remake, Maurice is reimagined as an artist. He's no longer "crazy old Maurice" either, instead making intricate music boxes to sell at market, in a house full of half-finished portraits.

Both he and his daughter are free spirits - hence their position on the edge of things -but he is somewhat emotionally guarded because of the tragic new backstory the film introduces.
