20 Greatest Horror Movie Opening Scenes of the 2020s (So Far)

12. Scream VI

How good is any Scream film without a killer opening scene? And though Scream VI isn't great overall, it does boast one of the most brilliantly expectation-defying pre-title sequences in the series' history.

In New York City, we're introduced to film studies teacher Laura Crane (Samara Weaving), who is waiting in a bar when she receives a call from her apparent date, who claims he can't find the bar and lures her into the nearby alley.

The caller's voice then morphs into Ghostface's moments before Laura is stabbed to death - and here's where things get interesting.

The killer then removes their mask to reveal that they're a young man, Jason (Tony Revolori) - a Ghostface obsessive who is also one of Tara Carpenter's (Jenna Ortega) college friends.

It's then revealed that Jason and his roommate Greg are Ghostface copycats attempting to finish Richie's (Jack Quaid) "movie" from the previous Scream.

But at that moment, he receives a call from another Ghostface, just as Jason finds Greg's dismembered body in their fridge.

The "real" Ghostface then emerges and kills Jason after dropping the immortal one-liner, "Who gives a f**k about movies?"

For everything Scream VI got wrong, it knocked its opening scene way out of the park.
