20 Greatest Horror Movie Opening Scenes of the 2020s (So Far)
4. Backrooms
Backrooms kicks off with a marvelously creepy found footage sequence which ensures that even someone who has no familiarity with Kane Parsons' beloved web series will be instantly gripped.
The scene shows footage of Naren Wayne (Avan Jogia), a researcher from 1990 who takes a trip into the extradimensional expanse known as the Backrooms, where they get separated from their fellow researchers and find themselves being pursued by a largely unseen entity.
After a brief chase, the researcher is cornered and killed off-screen by the force, immediately confirming to the audience that there are some abject, uncanny terrors residing within the Backrooms.
Some might be a little disappointed that the entire film didn't stay true to this fiercely effective analog found footage style, but unlike Shelby Oaks the film as a whole is so terrifically crafted that Parsons more than earns the switch to a more conventional "cinematic" aesthetic.
