20 Greatest Horror Movie Endings of the 2020s (So Far)
15. I Saw the TV Glow
Jane Schoenbrun's mesmerising psychological horror-drama I Saw the TV Glow revolves around Owen (Justice Smith), a teenager who comes to question his reality and sense of identity courtesy of a young adult TV series called The Pink Opaque.
In the film's epilogue, a now-middle-aged Owen has grown increasingly depressed and works at a family entertainment center. During a child's birthday party, he starts screaming and begging for help, but nobody reacts.
Owen then locks himself in the bathroom, cuts his chest open and smiles upon seeing a TV inside, before returning to work and apologising for his outburst.
Though Schoenbrun's film categorically won't be for all tastes, this is an absolutely shattering ending that so perfectly encapsulates the feeling of being wholly uncomfortable in your own skin - both as it pertains to trans identity and on a broader level.
Is it a weird ending? Absolutely, but it's also uniquely haunting, unforgettable, and terrifically acted by Smith.
