Filmmaker Gareth Evans surprised a lot of people by following up his two stupendously entertaining The Raid movies with an unexpected detour into folk horror territory for his 2018 film Apostle.

And while some were left disappointed that it lacks the propulsive, energetically violent action of his previous action-thrillers, taken on its own terms with is an uncommonly atmospheric, unnerving slow-burn horror.

Sure, it's effectively homaging The Wicker Man - revolving around a British man (Dan Stevens) who tries to rescue his sister from a remote island cult - but Evans' approach is far more visceral, serving up some of the most unforgettably gnarly, queasy brutality of any film released this past decade.

Evans posits a few interesting things we haven't seen in folk horror before, it's visually stunning, the score rips, and the performances from Stevens and Michael Sheen are especially terrific.

And yet, while The Raid movies are still fondly championed today, barely anyone ever talks about this one.
