20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)

3. The Marvels

Even though the Marvel Cinematic Universe was seeing the law of diminishing box office returns kick in with most of its releases post-Avengers: Endgame, it was still assumed that a Captain Marvel sequel would perform solidly.

After all, the first film raked in an astonishing $1.131 billion worldwide, and even though it benefitted enormously from releasing between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, few expected the sequel to flat-out bomb.

On an obscene gross budget of $374 million, The Marvels made just $206.1 million, making it the lowest-grossing film in the entire MCU to date and one of the series' few films to not even get close to breaking even theatrically.

This sequel grossing less than 20% of its predecessor isn't what anyone predicted, and it spoke to not only the MCU's generally diminishing rep at the time but also the perceived "homework" required to know all the characters, further unaided by naff marketing and so-so reviews.

This was a perfect storm of factors which combined to leave The Marvels DOA at the box office, though even its grandest sceptics couldn't have foreseen a collapse this catastrophic.
