20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)
20. Digger
Alejandro G. Iñárritu's Digger is one of the year's most polarising films - an extremely bold satirical black comedy that's tough to talk about without spoiling the big surprise that's been bravely left out of its marketing.
The Tom Cruise-starring film is one hell of a big swing any way you slice it and, with a premise primed to alienate large swaths of the mainstream, was always going to struggle to turn a profit.
This is especially true with its colossal budget, said to have ballooned to as high as $180 million over the course of production, which leaves it needing to gross at least $360 million to end up in the black.
But that's not going to happen, given that Digger had a worldwide opening of just $20 million, leaving it unlikely to gross more than $50 million by the end of its run.
Even with the film's envelope-pushing style and tone, that's a woeful outcome, and industry estimates suggest it could lose Warner Bros. as much as $250 million.
While many have sprung to Digger's defence, there's also a fair discussion to be had about how the film managed to cost such an obscene amount of money.
