20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)
18. Borderlands
Considering that Borderlands is one of the most beloved and recognisable video game franchises today, it was just a matter of time before it caught the attention of Hollywood.
And honestly, a $120 million budget for a Borderlands blockbuster doesn't sound totally nuts considering the series' rich world and larger-than-life action.
But the production was basically a revolving door of red flags, from the many dubious casting choices - especially Kevin Hart as Roland - to its long-delayed release, reshoot-heavy post-production, and reports that original co-writer Craig Mazin had his credit removed before release.
Ultimately nothing in the marketing made Borderlands look particularly worthwhile, and though many assumed it might still perform passably thanks to its branding, it ended up grossing a brutal $33 million worldwide - barely 25% of its production budget.
Considering that a fun, well-cast Borderlands movie could've easily launched a franchise of action-adventure tentpoles, what an utter waste this misfire of an adaptation was.
