20 Most Insane Box Office Flops Of The 2020s (So Far)

14. The Matrix Resurrections

With the immense popularity of The Matrix franchise and Keanu Reeves' undeniable resurgence over the past decade, many assumed that a fourth Matrix film simply couldn't fail - even with a stonking $190 million budget in tow.

But The Matrix Resurrections released in December 2021 and ended up grossing just $160.2 million - a fraction of what its three predecessors raked in individually.

First and foremost, it did the film no favours at all that Warner Bros. decided to release it day-and-date on their streaming service HBO Max, ensuring people didn't even need to leave their house to watch it.

Couple this with a wildly mixed reception from fans who did watch it, its boldly meta, mainstream-alienating tone, and the absence of original cast members Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving, and there simply weren't many tripping over themselves to throw money at a new Matrix.

But because no franchise as iconic as this can ever truly die, of course a fifth film is currently in development, which will likely be positioned as a soft reboot.
