Bird Box Review: 4 Ups & 4 Downs

A cliched yet entertaining post-apocalyptic thriller.

Just in time for Christmas, the new Sandra Bullock-starring post-apocalyptic thriller Bird Box is streaming now on Netflix.

Adapted from Josh Malerman's 2014 novel by legendary (yet wildly inconsistent) director Susanne Bier (Brothers, In A Better World), the movie stars Bullock as a mother attempting to protect her two children from supernatural entities which cause anyone who looks at them to commit suicide.

The ensemble genre film has scored mixed-to-positive reviews from most critics so far, with the majority agreeing that it's an enjoyable yet somewhat uneven effort.

While there was in fact Oscar buzz for Bird Box a few short months ago, that quickly evaporated following its AFI Fest premiere last month, where it became clear Bier and company wouldn't be taking the movie to the Academy Awards.

Still, it's neat that you can watch a movie starring card-carrying A-listers like Sandra Bullock and John Malkovich without having to venture out into the cold to your nearest cinema.

It's certainly a theatrical-calibre movie - whatever that means nowadays - though you should definitely temper your expectations going in.

Considering this time last year we had Bright to close out 2017's slate of Netflix Originals, this is an undeniable step up...
