In an interview with Inverse, writer Josh Malerman confirmed that a sequel to the 2018 adaptation of his novel Bird Box is currently in development at Netflix. Malerman, who wrote the 2014 novel on which the film is based, was inspired to pen a sequel novel after seeing the film - Malorie, which is set to be released later this month on July 21.

Malorie opens at the school for the blind, which is where the movie ends. Then it jumps a few years later, and it really takes off 10 years after that. I can’t say much, but I can say that it is in development… Sometimes it’s weird, all this secrecy, but I’m game

Bird Box was a considerable success for Netflix, earning the highest first week viewership numbers for any of their original programming, though critical reception was more mixed. The film also spawned a half-meme/half-serious online challenge that encouraged participants to blindfold themselves and traverse an environment, similar to the premise of the film.

At least one woman caused a car accident while participating in the challenge, leading Netflix to release a statement urging people not to undertake the challenge and risk hurting themselves or others.
