Bright: Is David Ayer Just Making Suicide Squad Again?
Deadshot. Killer Croc. Harley Quinn. The gang's all here, sort of anyway.
If you're David Ayer, what do you do after making Suicide Squad?
It's not an easy question to answer, given the critical mauling the film received, and the reported behind-the-scenes struggles of directing it, but now Netflix have revealed what Ayer will be doing next - and it looks a fair bit like his last movie.
Set in an alternate universe where humans, orcs, elves and fairies have been co-existing since the beginning of time, the movie will follow two police officers from very different backgrounds.
Ward, a human (Will Smith), and Jakoby, an orc (Joel Edgerton), embark on a routine night patrol that will alter the future of their world as they know it. Battling their enemies and themselves, they're forced to work together to protect a young female elf and a forgotten but potentially destructive relic. You can check out the first teaser for the movie, which also stars Noomi Rapace, here:
Will Smith is playing another world-weary type with cool eyewear, so basically Deadshot, while the following screengrab shows that Killer Croc is apparently in the movie too, wielding a shotgun:
And not content with one Harley Quinn, it looks like there could be a pair of 'em here:
Aside from the Suicide Squad vibe - which is present even without the similar appearances mentioned above - there's also a bit of a True Detective feel to it. It looks super weird, and the premise backs that up. It's worth remembering, however, that Ayer had made a couple of excellent movies prior to Suicide Squad, and without much interference might get the chance to remind us all of that here.
Bright will be released on Netflix this December.
