5. Rosetta

The Belgian Dardenne brothers' background in documentary films is one of the first things that strikes the viewer when watching their movies - featuring mostly handheld camerawork and naturalistic performances, they attempt to craft art as closely to real life as possible. Their first feature to win the Palme d'Or, Rosetta, is a striking example of the effectiveness of this approach. Focusing on the life of a teenage girl as she struggles to support her alcoholic mother in a deprived Belgian city, it's a raw and challenging film which went on to inspire a change in the law regarding teenager workers in the country. The Dardenne brothers picked up another Palme d'Or for their equally impressive film The Child - more recently they vied for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film with Two Days, One Night.
