Captain America 3 Wasn't Always Going To Be Civil War

Bucky is the key.

We're tantalisingly close to the release of Civil War, but it's now been revealed that wasn't always the plan for the second Captain America sequel.

The marketing for the film has made it clear that Bucky is a key part of the plot, and a big factor in the fighting between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. It's his presence, and continuation on from The Winter Soldier, that helps make this a Cap sequel rather than another Avengers movie, and now Marvel chief Kevin Feige has revealed that was the case before the film became Civil War.

He told io9: €œWe developed Captain America 3 knowing we wanted to continue the Bucky story. Is Bucky going to get his mind back?...How does Steve€™s desire to save Bucky bring him into conflict with something else...? And Chris and Steve came up with a number of cool plots that could€™ve worked, but none of them were feeling worthy of a follow up to Winter Soldier.€

Markus added that they had a plot that contained a few elements that have made it into Civil War, centred around Bucky and also, intriguingly, still including Baron Zemo, who is shaping up to be a figure manipulating things from the background, and may yet have a big part to play in Bucky's story.

He went on to note that "the further you probe into the effects of the Winter Soldier on the , by not bringing in other people, we€™re actually ignoring content.€

Those other people, of course, include Iron Man and Spider-Man, although Feige did note that there were versions without them. However, once the central conflict was in place, they realised that they had to make it Civil War, something Feige had long wanted to do, and now all the pieces were in place.

McFeely commented: €œOh? Really? Civil War? Sure. We€™ll try not to f**k that up.€

Based on how great it looks, as well as the massively positive reviews, I think it can safely be said that they've succeeded.

Captain America: Civil War is released in the UK on April 29, and May 6 in the US.
