Captain America Civil War: 11 Critical Reactions You Need To Know
11. Tom Holland Is The Best Spider-Man Yet
Much has been made of Marvel Studios' fairly late-day decision to add Spider-Man to the Civil War line-up, and the verdict is finally in: Tom Holland doesn't just kill it, he slaughters all prior iterations of the character.
Empire claim that Spidey gets "the reboot the character truly deserves", while praise came out in spades for Holland: "[he dons] the nervous, nerdy mien of Peter Parker to terrifically scene-stealing effect" (Variety), "Holland’s agile performance bodes well for next year’s Spider-Man reboot" (The Hollywood Reporter), and "his Peter Parker is perfect - nervy, goofy and instantly endearing" (Total Film).
In addition to the claim that Holland "makes for the best screen representation of Spider-Man" (Birth. Movies. Death.), some went even further: "Hands down, Spider-Man is the best thing in this movie. He not only steals Cap’s shield, he pretty much steals his movie, too." (IGN)
IGN did qualify their praise slightly though: "He could be cut out of it without making any difference to the narrative whatsoever", which is a little disappointing considering how pivotal he was to the Civil War comic.
All said and done, though, it sounds like Spidey is finally back in safe hands.
