Captain Marvel: 10 Things We Learned From The EW Reveal
1. This Is Carol's Old Friend, Maria "Photon" Rambeau
A significant supporting character in the movie will be Maria "Photon" Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), one of Danvers' oldest friends and a God-tier Air Force pilot who has a young daughter.
Curiously, in the comics Maria was the mother of Monica Rambeau, one of the earlier iterations of Captain Marvel who even became the leader of The Avengers for a while. Maria's pilot call sign being Photon is also clearly a nod to her daughter using the same moniker as her code-name in the comics.
It doesn't seem likely that the movie will be setting up Monica's involvement in the present-day MCU, so this is likely more a cute little nod to Captain Marvel's lineage more than anything, but you never know.
