Carol's Air Force buddy has been slightly changed for the movie, with Monica Rambeau being swapped out for her mother, Maria. She's clearly setup as Carol's best friend on Earth at one point, but what comes after that?

Her appearance in the trailer comes as Carol is talking about memories, and the suggestion is that Maria is an important part of her past. Understandably, she may have been left behind - not everyone can go off into space and visit alien worlds - but what became of her, and will she and Carol meet again in the present? Or might Maria have been killed in the very accident that leads to Carol being altered? Could this even sow the seeds for her daughter to arrive in the MCU?
