6. Interstellar (2014)

There are many calling cards of Nolan the filmmaker - from the time-bending structures to the tormented characters - but perhaps the most important theme of his work is hope. 

Treacly as it may sound, Nolan has always had a beautiful worldview, a commendable belief that despite all the darkness, love will always prevail. Never has that worldview seeped into his work more than it did with Interstellar, his visually awe-inspiring tale of an astronaut (a tear-jerking Matthew McConaughey) who leaves his family behind for a mission to save a dying Earth.

Gorgeous and moving, Interstellar is a survival thriller on the surface, and a heartwrenching story of parents and their children underneath.

It's a film about dreams and human connection, and finds Nolan working with his heart on his sleeve, even as the film's scale - its stunning space sequences and trippy final act - finds him at his ambitious, grand best. Never has Nolan been so emotionally enveloping.
