8. Doctor Strange Series Announced

Marvel ComicsIt's been a while since Stephen Strange headlined his own book, but that could very well be about to change. Marvel's editor-in-chief hinted as much in his Comic Book Resources column recently, responding to a question of the latest New Avengers annual - which is, for all intents and purposes, a solo Strange story - asking whether it was testing the waters for a possible Doctor Strange ongoing series? "There is a plan," wrote Alonso. "I'm not going to get into the who€™s, when€™s or what€™s, but I will confirm that we have a writer, and he or she has got a very firm handle on what they're going to do." Which makes sense. Strange has been a bit part of the publisher's Original Sin crossover event, and he's been edging ever closer to the public consciousness with appearances in various Avengers titles, helping superheroes deal with more mystical menaces. It would also make sense that Marvel would want a Strange solo title, since they've got him pencilled in for a film adaptation in the next couple of years, helmed by Sinister and The Day the Earth Stood Still director Scott Derrickson. Having a comic that can cash in on that movie? That's a no-brainer. So we're pretty certain that we'll have some sort of Doctor Strange announcement at SDCC, but what that announcement will be...we're less certain. Alonso was playing coy about the writer on the book, but they're clearly got one. Right now the most believable suggestion we've heard is that Kieron Gillen will take the reins. As a guy who's had experience with the mystical side of the Marvel Universe (Journey Into Mystery) and who has just wrapped up his run on Iron Man, we can't think of anyone better. Likelihood: Medium. Alonso has sort-of confirmed it, but we may not necessarily get told about it at Comic-Con. The film has yet to enter production, and if they want the comic to tie into it, it might not start until late 2015, in which case it'd be jumping the gun to officially announce it in July 2014. Plus Gillen's still busy with Original Sin: Hulk vs Iron Man and his indie titles The Wicked + The Divine and Uber, so we'll see!
