Comic Con 2016: 8 Awesome Moments We Need To See
8. Blomkamps Alien Is Happening
The road to Neil Blomkamp's Alien sequel has been a long and winding one, not unlike that of a Facehugger. Beginning with a concept art reveal on his Instagram all the way back in January 2015, initially the District 9 director was quick to state that these were done without studio input as a personal project. Fast forward a month and Sigourney Weaver had officially signed on to the directors passion project, mentioning that the fifth Alien film was set to ignore the events of Alien 3 and Resurrection, instead taking part in an alternate continuity.
“It’s just as if…the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to Neill’s movie…In this case, it picks up, it follows directly the circumstances of Jim Cameron’s Aliens.”
Then along came Ridley Scott and Prometheus 2, now titled Alien Covenant. Twentieth Century Fox put Blomkamp's Alien film on hold at the request of series founder Scott and all that forward momentum crashed to a halt - it seemed like the ongoing adventures of Ripley, Hicks and Newt would have to wait a couple more years....
And then the Aliens: 30th Anniversary panel was announced for Comic Con. Featuring James Cameron, Sigourney Weaver, Michael Biehn and 'special guests'. There's little doubt the roof would blow off in a hail of pulse rifle fire if they were to announce an official start date for Alien 5 here.
If there's anywhere the we'll see Blomkamp and Weaver on stage together to make an announcement, it will be here.
