20 Upcoming Movie Sequels You Had NO IDEA About
These sequels are all absolutely, positively happening.
We all know that sequels are what Hollywood craves most - certainly more than original ideas, because why take a risk on an unknown quantity when you can bet on IP instead?
Every year there are dozens and dozens of movie sequels produced, enough that it can be tough for audiences to keep track of them all, and so inevitably some of them end up flying way, way under the radar.
And that's absolutely the case with these 20 sequels, which despite being announced and perhaps even fully shot, you probably have no idea about.
Some of them have been in development long enough that most fans had given up on them ever getting made, while others have been produced under a veil of secrecy.
Whatever the reason, you likely had no idea these sequels were happening, but each is currently in some stage of active development.
Sequels being what they are the quality is likely to vary wildly among them, but fingers are crossed that most of them at least deliver a worthy - if not brilliant - follow-up to what came before...
20. Days of Thunder 2
Tom Cruise is one of the few remaining bankable A-listers of his era, and with Top Gun: Maverick turning out such a phenomenal success back in 2022, it wasn't long before Hollywood started combing back over Cruise's earlier works for more potential legacy sequels.
And in late 2024, it was announced that Cruise was developing a follow-up to his 1990 racing drama Days of Thunder, though at the time Cruise didn't seem fully committed to the idea, only mentioning that he was talking to Paramount about it.
But last June, Cruise's friend and NASCAR legend Jeff Gordon revealed that Cruise told him Days of Thunder 2 was definitely moving forward, and recent reports indicate that the script is currently being written.
Around that time, Top Gun: Maverick and F1 director Joseph Kosinski even teased a possible crossover between Days of Thunder and F1. If nothing else, the box office dynamite of a racing film starring Cruise and Brad Pitt speaks for itself.
And with the general success of big-budget racing films in recent years, there's clear potential for even a more straight-forward Days of Thunder legacy sequel to be a sizable hit, likely outdoing an original that, let's face it, isn't really all that great.
