14. Top Gun 3

It was enough of a surprise that Top Gun: Maverick got made almost 40 years after the original, and certainly nobody could've predicted it to be both an eye-watering box office success and Best Picture Oscar nominee.

Maverick was enough of a pop-culture phenomenon that Paramount swiftly began exploring a potential Top Gun 3, and by May 2025 Maverick and Mission: Impossible filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie was said to be working on the threequel's script.

Even so, with Tom Cruise's ever-busy schedule and the sheer force of will it requires to get such a huge production up and running, it would've surprised nobody if Top Gun 3 languished in development hell for a couple of decades.

But at CinemaCon back in April, Paramount confirmed that Top Gun 3 isn't just a pie-in-the-sky idea - it's real, and it's now in development. 

If Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski are back, in the very least we know it'll be a technical masterclass even if it fails to recapture the novelty factor of its predecessor.
