Considering that Creed left fans wondering about the (seemingly improving) health of Rocky, it was assumed by most that Creed 2 would take place fairly close in proximity to the first movie. However, that doesn't seem to be the case at all, and you know what? That's a good thing.

Poignant though Rocky's apparent triumph over non-Hodgkin's lymphoma was in Creed, it's probably for the best to leave that in the past and not exploit it again in a second movie.

Similarly, moving Adonis on past the emotional state he was in at the end of the last movie is an easy way to present him with fresh, new obstacles, which will hopefully amount to more than just the aforementioned "I'm not my father, or am I?" hand-wringing.

It also presumably means that Adonis' rep within the boxing community has surged significantly since the last film, even if he's clearly still the overwhelming underdog going into his battle against Viktor Drago.
