20 Movies Critics HATE But Audiences LOVE
4. The Dirt
Time and time again, it's been made abundantly clear that general audiences have a much stronger tolerance for by-the-numbers musical biopics than critics, who have clearly been sick of them since Bohemian Rhapsody.
The Dirt is a 2019 biopic of legendary glam metal band Mötley Crüe, and was largely pilloried by critics who felt that it was an overly safe, sanitised take on the chaotic band's history, settling for the blandly generic "Wikipedia Page Movie" treatment rather than something better fitting the Crüe's subversive vibe.
But audiences do love themselves a clean, tidy music biopic as long as it's got decent performances and the filmmakers have secured the rights to the band's original songs, both of which were true here.
And so, The Dirt reached a mighty 94% audience approval, confirming once again that you need to go really off-piste to make a musical biopic that bores the masses.
