Like the storm caused in the wake of Heath Ledger's casting as the Joker in 2008's The Dark Knight, so, too, did the news that Ben Affleck had been chosen to don the cape and cowl of Batman stir up a lot of heated debate. While many held out hope and believed that Affleck would do the character justice, it seemed that the overwhelming number of negative voices at the time drowned the optimism out.

For whatever faults lay on Batman v Superman's shoulders, none of them rest on Affleck, who stole the show as both Bruce Wayne and the Caped Crusader. Yes, people have and will pick apart the fact that Batman kills in this movie and joke about the writing behind the "Martha" thing, but taken as a whole, Affleck's Batman was unlike any we'd yet to see on the big screen: Truly relentless, with a fighting style reminiscent of Rocksteady's Arkham games, and one who actually gets around to doing detective work.

Just like Ledger, Affleck proved many wrong, doing so well that his performance is one of the things those divided on the film itself can generally agree upon is solid. And while many are still concerned about how and if the DCEU can dig itself out from the critical rut it found itself in this year going forward, the idea of seeing where this new take on the Dark Knight can go, whether it be in next year's Justice League or the Affleck-directed solo film, is exciting.
