Denzel Washington has entered early talks with Universal Pictures to star in 2 Guns, an action heavy thriller that already has Mark Wahlberg attached to star, reuniting with his Contraband director Baltasar Kormakur. Based on Steve Grant's graphic novel at BOOM! Studios, the two lead 'pulp' action thriller revolves around two lawmen - a DEA agent and an undercover naval officer - who must investigate each other as they have been tasked to steal mob money. It has been adapted for the screen by Brotherhood writer Blake Masters. Previously the film was setup as a reunion of The Fighter players Mark Wahlberg and director David O.Russell but the latter bailed and Wahlberg quickly hired his Contraband director to replace him. At that point the film was also to be an action/comedy, but with the new director and Washington's appointment, I'm thinking it will be much more the former and more serious. Universal have become very used to releasing these mid-sized lean thrillers and indeed we just yesterday reviewed their latest action thriller of this ilk with Safe House, which also stars Washington. Wahlberg and Kormakur's Contraband also belongs to the same genre. No financing has been secured yet but it shouldn't be long in coming together once Washington signs on the bottom line.
