There was a time when Disney sequels were cheap direct-to-VHS deals rushed out to mar the legacy of countless classics. Now in a marketplace where the franchise is king, they're a big deal, with budgets the size of the original and the care for quality to match. They even get their own snazzy Facebook Live announcements.

In a heavily-marketed stream, director Rich Moore and Phil Johnston have just announced Wreck-It Ralph 2 is definitely happening. If that doesn't sound all that surprising, that's because star John C. Reilly's been blabbing about the sequel for a while, something he sends up in a nice cameo in the recording. They did at least throw in a release date - 9th March 2018 - which is exciting close (in animation terms).

I enjoyed the first Wreck-It Ralph, even if it ultimately wasn't quite as into the video game world concept as it seemed, honing in on a single princess story, and the promise of more is great; now the property's proven there's much more scope for the range of characters who can appear and worlds to be explored (I've got my fingers crossed for Mario and Gordon Freeman). As for plot, the accompanying concept art provides a little bit - they'll be going into the internet. Very cool.
