Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness: 10 Reasons It Sucks
5. Dr Strange Has No Arc
To call back to a certain infamous quote by Game of Thrones showrunner David Benioff, the MCU has kinda forgot about something incredibly important: character arcs.
The earlier MCU films work very well because they are deeply focused on character journeys (well, mostly, anyhow) but when one looks at most of the last few MCU flicks, there's very little of that.
Not only does the film spit in the face of Wanda Maximoff's arc throughout 2021's WandaVision (more on that soon), but it doesn't give the hero himself any real development.
Doctor Strange is nothing but a static character all the way through and he doesn't really develop at all, while there are various moments - such as his decision to spare America instead of taking her powers - that feel like pay-offs without any sort of set-up.
There was so much potential to explore Strange's character here; they could've even had him, instead of Wanda, becoming corrupted by the Darkhold and having to conquer his dark side. As such, Strange's total lack of an arc makes the film feel like even more of a missed opportunity.
