18. Hit The Deck

In interviews, Christopher Nolan has insisted that the PG-13 rating won't impact Dunkirk's intensity level, because the film is concerned more with suspense rather than realistic combat gore.

We can see just a sliver of that tension as groups of soldiers cower helplessly from raining fire and bombs, hitting the deck and praying for the best.

The below image also appeared in the film's original teaser as part of an agonisingly long single take, where the soldiers awaiting evacuation panickedly hit the floor as an enemy ship readied an attack. It looks nothing short of white-knuckle.
