Edgar Wright: The Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

By Edward Owen /

The opening song of the film €“ Primal Scream€™s Loaded €“ uses lines from the 1966 Roger Corman film The Wild Angels. A counter-culture cult classic, the devil-may-care attitude and actions of the Angels motorcycle gang are mirrored in Gary€™s approach to life. Obviously this is only to a certain extent €“ the Angels themselves are a particularly nasty bunch, committing sexual assaults and other myriad felonies at will. All Gary wants to do Is get loaded and have a good time. That target is expressed in the opening music through Peter Fonda€™s line in reposne to the question €˜just what is it that you want to do?€™ He says, word-for-word: €˜We wanna be free, we wanna be free to do what we want to do. And we wanna get loaded, and we wanna have a good time.€™ Gary later parrots back this credo when The Network asks him the same question.
