Edgar Wright: The Definitive Guide To Homages, Influences And References

By Edward Owen /

After leaving The Old Familiar the group attempt to get into The Famous Cock where they can have the third pint of their crawl. Unfortunately, this pub happens to be the first where Gary gets recognised, with the landlord saying he€™s on the banned for life list. The name €˜The Famous Cock€™ is therefore inspired by Gary€™s status as a notorious former drinker in the establishment. He had to have been a cock to get himself barred for life, and certainly famous enough for the publican to remember it. Also, outside the pun there€™s a clever numerical reference to the pub€™s status as the third stop on the Golden Mile. The reference ccomes when Gary makes a pint out of three separate glasses in an effort to continue his one-pint-one-pub policy. Despite being possibly the only time the drinking practice known as €˜minesweeping€™ was committed to celluloid, the three glasses are obviously a reference to the third pub.
