Eternals: 24 WTF Moments
Eternals may not be the best MCU film, but it sure is one of the weirdest.
After what's felt like an eternity (sorry) of waiting, Chloé Zhao's Eternals is finally here, and though there's nothing more WTF than the film's shockingly tepid Rotten Tomatoes score, it is certainly a film that doesn't want for weirdness.
Eternals is absolutely a heavily flawed piece of work - a messy superhero epic that sprawls all over the place - yet while its more formulaic fantasy elements often overwhelm, it still does just enough to let its freak flag frequently fly.
This is a superhero movie that categorically reframes the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a potentially major way, while making progressive steps forward for the franchise and, er, making some slightly less-convincing attempts to deliver a more mature brand of comic book film.
Eternals goes all over the map with its comedy and drama, indulging some seriously out-there concepts and goofy humour to wildly mixed results.
Not every gamble and hard swing works, but at least it's got way more personality than, say, Thor: The Dark World or Black Widow, right?
But of course, it's those credits scenes that are truly going to get people talking. And so begins our list of Eternals' 24 biggest WTF moments...
24. Sprite Poses As An Adult Woman
The present-day portion of the movie kicks off in London, where Sersi (Gemma Chan) and Sprite (Lia McHugh) are out drinking with Sersi's human partner Dane Whitman (Kit Harington).
For a beat, we linger on Sprite as she disguises herself as an adult woman in the bar while talking to a man, because of course, her natural form perpetually resembles that of a 12-year-old girl.
Sadly though, when the man at the bar attempts to touch her hand he phases through it, given that the woman is merely an intangible projection created by Sprite. When the guy questions it, Sprite tells him he's drunk.
It's a scene both weird and sad - odd because Sprite is an ancient alien inside a child's body yearning to touch an adult male, and sad because her natural form prevents her from ever having a meaningful romantic relationship. That'd put a chip on anyone's shoulder.
