Though the Star Wars franchise once again missed out on the major plaudits its fans would love to see it nominated for, The Last Jedi was a riveting, expectation-defying follow-up to the more straight-forward and familiar The Force Awakens.

Clearly not all fans were taken with Rian Johnson's bold vision for the franchise, but with some of the series' most intriguing twists and entrancing visuals to date, it was nothing if not a sequel that refused to rest on its laurels.

There are certainly moments that could've been better-executed, but for the most part, Johnson has turned in one of the strongest Star Wars movies as of yet.
