Mudbound is the movie that put Netflix on the map when it comes to "serious" Oscar categories, and it also scored the first-ever Best Cinematography nomination for a woman thanks to Rachel Morrison's gorgeous lensing.

From top to bottom this is a superbly-assembled effort from writer-director Dee Rees, a grim but devastatingly human period drama about harsh life in the post–World War II South.

Though Mudbound isn't terribly likely to win any of its four nominations, it's still fantastic to see the streaming platform taken seriously as an outlet for high-minded awards fare.
